Reception

Students in Reception at ISB lay a strong foundation in literacy, numeracy, social studies and science through a variety of fun, hands-on activities. Within the framework of a Unit of Inquiry, they build upon knowledge they already possess and learn how to work independently and together in groups of various sizes.

Early in Term 1 students in Reception developed a set of rules, called Essential Agreements, to guide them through the learning process. The Six Essential Agreements include

  • Walk Nicely,
  • Sit Nicely,
  • Raise a Quiet Hand,
  • Play Nicely,
  • Talk Nicely,
  • Be Responsible.

Reception’s daily agenda reinforces what students know and introduces new skills for them to master. The agenda is fluid, but usually takes the following form:

  • Morning Session includes many activities focusing on literacy and numeracy, including reading the calendar, telling time, counting the number of days in school, estimating, and phonics.
  • Literacy includes whole-group, small-group, and independent literacy activities related to the Unit of Inquiry.
  • Small Group includes a variety of activities specifically targeting core skills that are related to the Unit of Inquiry.
  • Numeracy includes group and independent activities in number, measurement, patterns and function, statististics and probability, and shape and space. Whenever possible, activites in numeracy are also related to the Unit of Inquiry.
  • Workshop is a time for students to work independently on literacy and numeracy. Workshop is held in the ISB Computer Lab and may include Lexia Reading, Symphony Mathematics and Cross-trainer.
  • Specialist Classes are interspersed within the day and include

Pembantus and Drivers

Pembantus and drivers should not remain at school throughout snack or lunch times unless there is an emergency. Also, children in Reception are developing independence and are learning the meaning of responsibility.  Pembantus and drivers should not be collecting lunches or bags that have been left lying around.  It is the responsibility of the children to clean up after themselves.

Homework

Monday through Thursday, students are given reading folders to take home with them. The folders contains Reading Logs and leveled books for them to read at home. Parents, please make sure that you sign the Reading Logs each night after your children read the leveled books. On Mondays, homework packets are included in the folders for students to complete during the week and return on Friday. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.
