Students in this class build a strong foundation in literacy, numeracy, social studies and science through a variety of fun, hands-on activities. Within the framework of a Unit of Inquiry, they build upon knowledge they already possess and learn how to work independently and together in groups of various sizes.

Young children at this age are ready to gain a clear understanding of how the world works. At the start of the school year,  the children work together to develop a set of rules, called Essential Agreements, which guide them through the learning process. The agreements are guidelines for behaviour and how they interact with each other, such as respecting each others’ opinions, differences and abilities.

The daily timetable in class reinforces what students know and introduces new skills for them to master. The day also includes a variety of activities specifically targeting core skills that are related to the Unit of Inquiry.

There are always many activities focusing on literacy and numeracy. For literacy this includes:

  • Storywriting
  • Spelling activities
  • Reading targeted texts
  • Comprehension
  • Presentation opportunities

The focus in numeracy at this development stage is for students to be able to talk about their thinking process as they solve problems. Activities include:

  • Group and independent activities in number
  • Measurement
  • Patterns and function
  • Statistics and probability
  • Shape and space

Students in this class each week also attend a variety of specialist subjects, including PE, swimming, music, library and bahasa Indonesia.

This class is supported by a full time classroom teaching assistant. Every effort is therefore made to ensure that each child receives the individual attention that they need in order to meet their learning capabilities.
