Pupils at this age are offered many valuable opportunities to become confident, independent learners who do their best at all times.

The approach to teaching in these years is built on a belief that students learn best when they are motivated to learn and are exposed to genuine opportunities to explore and inquire into questions of importance.

All students learn in many different ways and we want to provide as many different opportunities as possible for students not only to play to their strengths but also to develop competencies in areas they may not be so sure about. Collaboration, inquiry, problem solving and thinking skills are key components of a young child’s education and these are ever present in any day at school. Mistakes are embraced as learning opportunities and a window into student thought processes.

Literacy is a key component of the curriculum at this age with a balance of listening, speaking, reading, writing and non-verbal communication. Daily literacy lessons are regularly linked to the unit of inquiry deepening and broadening student understanding of key concepts. Through integrated units of inquiry students are exposed to literacy and numeracy in the context of their learning. Children also attend a variety of specialist subjects which include PE, swimming, music, library and bahasa Indonesia. Many of these are also incorporated into the current unit of inquiry in order to ensure a well-rounded education.

Numeracy is approached with an important emphasis on problem solving and mental computation. Children are encouraged to not only seek answers to open ended problems but to explore a variety of ways to solve a problem and to pose their own questions and investigations. All classes cover the core areas of data handling, measurement, shape and space, pattern and function and number. Where possible, numeracy is integrated into the unit of inquiry.

As the units of inquiry are the central component of class learning many of the subjects are studied looking through the lens of the current “big idea” being investigated. Literacy and numeracy skills are applied in a real world context and the transdisciplinary subjects of social studies, science and personal social and physical education are strengthened through this approach.

This class is supported by a full time classroom teaching assistant.  Every effort is therefore made to ensure that each child receives the individual attention that they need in order to meet their learning capabilities.
