Middle School promotes the ethos of independent learning and aims to equip students with the study skills they need to achieve in their learning careers.  Teaching in the Middle School encourages the development of open-minded and creative learners, inspiring students to think critically and gain ownership of their knowledge and achievement.

Our Middle Years curriculum is a purposely designed, challenging, engaging, internationally-minded, concept-focused curriculum designed specifically for the unique learning needs for 11-14 year olds. We have taken the best elements of the IBO approach and blended that with internationally minded curriculum from a variety of English speaking countries.  It creates a learning-focused curriculum that helps students make meaning, connect their learning and develop their minds.

ISB’s learning-focused curriculum helps students:

  • Learn the subject knowledge, skills and understandings they need to become aware of the world around them and to develop throughout their lives.

  • Develop the personal skills they need to take an active part in the world throughout their lives.

  • Develop an international mind-set alongside their awareness of their own nationality.

  • Develop the ability to think and behave independently and interdependently.

The ISB curriculum responds to the changing nature of 11 to 14 year-old students by:

  • Putting rigorous skills at the heart of student learning. This means that day-to-day learning through the Middle School curriculum is active rather than passive;

  • Creating themes built around ‘central ideas’ and ‘lines of inquiry’ that respond to the drive of 11-14 year-olds to develop a sense of meaning in their lives;

  • Making the links between tasks and the central idea explicit so that middle-school students (and especially boys) can create a pathway through their learning;

  • Creating a series of units of inquiry to which subjects contribute interdependently and which give students a more coherent school experience;

  • Providing opportunities for regular reflection that add to students’ developing desire to make sense of their world and which make their key elements of their learning personal to them;

  • Creating an organisational pattern to each unit so that middle school students can have a consistent and supportive learning experience;

  • Providing extended demonstrations of understanding and reflections that require students to create and deliver a range of media-related summaries of their learning.
